Our Founder: Dr. Nimo Hagi Abubakar
Surgeon | Humanitarian | Mother
Dr. Nimo Hagi Abubakar isn't just the founder of the Save Mother and Child Foundation—she is the heart of a movement to transform maternal and child health across Somalia. A trained surgeon with over 40 years of frontline medical experience, Dr. Nimo has seen firsthand the devastating toll of preventable maternal and infant deaths.
Since 2003, she has:
- Performed thousands of life-saving surgeries in resource-limited settings
- Led mobile medical outreach to Somalia's most remote and underserved communities
- Trained dozens of local midwives and healthcare workers
In 2020, driven by a vision for a safer future for mothers and babies, she founded the Save Mother and Child Foundation. The initiative began with a pilot project at Al-Hayat Hospital in the Awdal region—a well-equipped teaching hospital affiliated with Amoud University. For her efforts, Dr.Nimo Abubakar, M.S.C has been awarded a Canadian Medal of Honor for her international service in healthcare. She was awarded the Meritorious Service Decoration (Civil Division)
